How zebra shades work

Two layers of striped fabric that slide past each other, so the stripes line up or do not.

A zebra shade is one continuous piece of fabric with bands that alternate sheer and solid, wrapped into a loop around a tube. Moving the shade slides the back layer against the front one.

When the sheer bands line up with the sheer bands, you are looking through two sheer layers and the window is open to the view. Move it half a stripe and the solid bands fill those gaps instead, and the room closes off.

The useful part is that the room does not go dark when it closes. With the solid bands aligned you still have a shade that is only as dark as its fabric, so a living room stays usable rather than switching between bright and black. That is the trick, and it is why this shade is the one most of our customers end up choosing.

Where zebra shades do best in a South Florida home

Any window where the honest answer is that you want both things at different times.

A living room facing a neighbor is the clearest case. During the day you want the room bright and the view open; in the evening with the lights on you want it closed, and you do not want to hang two treatments on one window to get both.

They also suit a kitchen, where a window over the sink needs light most of the time and privacy occasionally, and a ground floor room on a street.

In a condo they work on a wide run of glass because the mechanism is the same as a roller shade, so it handles size the same way. The one room to think twice about is a bedroom, since even with the solid bands aligned it is not a blackout.

What you choose

The band height, how solid the solid bands are, and whether the roll is cased in.

Band height changes the look more than anything else. Narrow bands read as a texture across the window; wide bands read as stripes and make a statement. On a tall window, wider bands usually look right, because narrow ones start to look busy at that scale.

The solid bands vary too. Some are genuinely opaque, which gives real privacy when aligned, and some are only semi-opaque, which keeps the room brighter but shows more at night.

The sheer bands vary in openness in the same way a solar fabric does. After that it is the same decision as a roller shade: an open roll, or a cassette that hides the tube behind a straight line.

Motorized zebra shades

A motor is particularly useful here, because the two useful positions are only half a band apart and a motor stops at them exactly every time. Saved positions mean one button for the view and another for privacy. See how motorization works.

Pairings

What people pair them with

Very few windows end up with one thing on them, and the combinations below are the ones that come up most.

If you only ever need one of the two states, a plain roller shade in the right fabric costs less and does that one job better. If heat rather than light is the complaint, a cellular shade will do more at the glass than any zebra will.

In a bedroom, people often fit a zebra for the daytime and add a blackout lined drapery panel for sleeping, which keeps the softness of the stripes in a room that still has to go dark. The same pairing works on a west-facing living room window, with a solar shade behind panels instead.

The stripes have to line up across a window that takes two shades, and that is a measuring job rather than a manufacturing one. Where a wide opening is split, we set both on one headrail and match the bands so the pattern reads continuously across the whole run.

The bottom rail is worth asking about. On most zebra shades it is a visible bar, and on better ones it is wrapped in the same fabric so the line across the window disappears. It is a small detail that changes how finished the shade looks from inside the room.

The rest of the shades we make are roller shades , cellular shades , roman shades and solar shades , and we will bring samples of whichever ones suit the room.

Questions about zebra shades

Anything not answered here gets answered at the appointment, and it costs nothing to ask.

Are zebra shades the same as dual shades?

Yes. Zebra, dual, banded and transitional all describe this shade. The name changes by manufacturer and by salesperson, not by product.

Can you see in at night?

With the solid bands aligned and an opaque fabric, not in any detail. With a semi-opaque fabric and the lights on, shapes are visible. It depends entirely on which fabric you choose, and it is one of the things worth testing against your own window at the appointment.

Do they block heat?

Less than a cellular shade, which traps air in pockets specifically for that. A zebra with the solid bands closed does stop some heat, but if a room is genuinely too hot in the afternoon, cellular is the better tool.

How do they handle a wide window?

The same way a roller shade does, because the mechanism is the same. Past a certain width the tube can bow, so a very wide opening is usually two shades on one headrail with the bands aligned across both.

Are they hard to clean?

Dust them with a soft brush or a vacuum on low. The sheer bands are the delicate part and they are not meant to be scrubbed. Most marks come off with a damp cloth used gently, and we will tell you what your specific fabric will take.
