The drapes we make
Panels do the work, and sheers do the softening.
Choosing
Compare Them Side by Side
The two are not alternatives, and most of the homes we fit end up with both. A drapery panel is the heavier fabric that pulls across, and with a blackout lining sewn to the back it is the only thing that takes a bedroom properly dark at the edges.
A sheer curtain is thin enough to see daylight through, so it takes the hard edge off the sun and gives the room some movement without making it dim.
Hung together, the sheers stay closed through the day and the panels come across at night. Hung alone, a sheer is for a room that is already private and only wants the glare softened, and a panel is for a room that needs to go dark or needs the window to look taller than it is.
| Feature | Drapery panels | Sheer curtains |
|---|---|---|
| Darkens the room | Yes, with blackout lining | No |
| Gives privacy | Yes | No |
| Keeps the room bright | No, when closed | Yes |
| Usually hung | Over a shade, or alone | Over a shade, under panels |

Drapery panels
A drapery panel is a length of fabric that hangs from a rod and pulls across. Made to measure, it breaks at the floor instead of stopping short, and that single detail is most of the difference between custom and a packet off a shelf. A blackout lining sewn to the back takes a bedroom properly dark, which no shade on its own quite manages at the edges. Hung high and wide, panels make a standard window look much larger than it is.

Sheer curtains
Sheer curtains are thin enough to see daylight through. They are not there for privacy. They are there to take the hard edge off the sun and to give a room some movement, because sheer fabric lifts when the air conditioning comes on. Most homes here hang them over a shade: the sheers stay closed all day and do the softening, and the shade behind them handles the dark and the privacy at night.

How high to hang them, and how far past the window
A rod fitted just above the window frame makes the window look exactly as tall as it is.
The same rod fitted close to the ceiling pulls the eye up and makes a standard opening look like a tall one, and it costs nothing extra beyond a slightly longer panel. In rooms with a soffit or a crown, we work to whatever the ceiling actually allows.
Width matters for a different reason. If the rod stops at the frame, the panels sit over the glass even when they are fully open, and you lose light all day. Running the rod past the opening on both sides gives the fabric somewhere to stack off the glass, so the window is genuinely clear when the panels are drawn back.
Length is the last call: breaking at the floor is the usual choice, and stopping a half inch above it is the practical one where a door or a vacuum has to pass.

Questions about drapes
We measure and install drapes across Broward , Miami-Dade and Palm Beach .
Can I have drapes over a shade on the same window?
Yes, and it is the most common thing we fit. You use the shade for light and privacy through the day, and the panels for darkness at night and for the way the room feels. They mount on separate hardware, so either one can be changed later without touching the other.
How do I clean them?
It depends on the fabric, and we tell you which yours is at the appointment. Most lined panels are dry clean only, because the lining and the face fabric shrink at different rates in water and the panel comes back puckered. Many unlined sheers can be washed cold and hung damp.
Will the sun fade them?
Any fabric in direct Florida sun will change over years, and that is true of every brand at every price. A lining is the main defense, because it takes the sun instead of the face fabric. On a west-facing window we usually suggest a lined panel, or a solar shade behind it to take the worst of the light before it reaches the fabric.
Can drapes be motorized?
Yes. The rod carries a motor that pulls the panels across, run from a remote, a wall switch or your phone. It is worth it on a very wide run or a window behind furniture, where reaching the leading edge means climbing over something.
